Are we the best lawyers in Queensland?
In a word........ maybe?
Jump onto your favourite search engine (Google, Bing or some other) and search for the best lawyers in Brisbane, or the Sunshine Coast, or the Gold Coast, and you’ll find an array of ‘Top 10 Solicitors‘ or ‘Top Rated Lawyers‘ or ‘Most Recommended‘ or ‘Best Lawyers‘ or even just ‘Leading‘ lawyers in your area.
Scroll through the lists and you’ll be sure to find some great law firms and great lawyers and solicitors in Queensland. But rest assured, it is very unlikely to be an objective, peer-reviewed, well-researched, and un-biased collection of who is actually the “best rated”.
Even the most prestigious and well respected lists are tainted by the collection of fees to feature at the top.
The top spots being reserved for the ones who want it most, or have the biggest marketing budgets, and not necessarily on merit, skill, or ability. Of course, there are excellent lawyers who want it, and have big marketing budgets, so don’t think I’m suggesting you should avoid them.
At best, I think any list you find should just be a starting point, or reference point in your own hunt for the “best”.
I say starting point because there are a few important things to remember:
- There are many, many lawyers who will not feature on these lists.
- What is “best” for one person and their issue, is not always the “best” for you and your issue.
- You need to get along with your lawyer, trust them, and understand them.
- and…. most importantly, you might not see us in the list your looking at!!
So next time you’re looking for the best business lawyers in Queensland, be sure not to just pick the first you come to.
Spoilt for Choice!
In Queensland, there are just over 14,000 lawyers certified to practice law (2020-21 QLS Annual Report). Of those, just over 3,500 hold ‘Principal Practicing Certificates’ and the remaining are employees or volunteers.
The ratio of male/female lawyers is essentially 50/50.
Some will have been practicing law for 50 plus years, and others will be in their very first year of being admitted to the legal profession.
The point is, there are thousands of lawyers, and thousands of law firms all over Queensland.
What is it to be the Best?
What does it mean to be the “best” at something? If you’ve ever debated who the GOAT is in any sport, you’ll understand how difficult (and fairly pointless) it is to try and name a best lawyer!
Each lawyer comes from a different background, has had different experiences, different exposures to the law, different teachers, different mentors, and holds different interests.
There are hundreds of factors that might go into a legal decision, and one size rarely fits all. It is impossible to be the best, let alone just be good, at every area of law.
Our philosophy is that you need to Find the Right Lawyer for You.
We have provided some tips on finding the right lawyer, and you shouldn’t be afraid to shop around.
Equally, don’t afraid to move on should a lawyer turn out not to be a good fit for you and your business.
